"They" say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach....that or the sports channel. Whatever the case may be, Father's Day is our chance to let Dad know just how special he is to us. So let's get cookin'.

Surprise Dad with breakfast in bed. Wake up early, sneak into the kitchen and if you're ambitious enough, try whipping up this strawberry pancake recipe.

Basic Pancake Recipe

  • 1/2 cup milk (or buttermilk)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine (melted)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix the milk, butter and egg in a bowl. Combine the flour, baking soda, sugar and salt and add them all at once to the first mixture. Stir until just moistened. Lightly butter or grease a griddle or frying pan and set over moderate heat until a few drops of cold water sprinkled on the pan form skittering globules. Pour about 1/4 cup of the batter (per pancake) onto the griddle. Cook until bubbles form on top and the undersides are lightly browned. Turn with a spatula and brown the other side. Place finished cakes on a heated plate in a very slow (200 F) oven until ready to serve. Top with strawberry jam, fresh strawberries, or strawberry syrup.

If cooking isn't your forte, then go with an easier menu. Pop some bagels in the toaster and serve with a simple strawberry spread.

Strawberry Butter

  • 1/2 cup butter or cream cheese, softened
  • 1/3 cup strawberry preserves
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon confectioner's sugar
Whip all together and serve. Add a steaming cup of coffee and some orange juice and you've got a feast fit for a king....or father!

There you have it....the perfect start to a perfect Father's Day. Let your dad's interests and hobbies rule for the remainder of the it laying on the couch in command of the remote; heading out to the links for a round of golf; or sitting in the middle of a lake waiting for the fish to's his day! Make the most of it.

Wishing you (and Dad) a......
